Smith and Khawaja settled in around the rain breaks while England failed to find an opening on a wicketless morning at the SCG

W
icketless session for Australia, Steven Smith and Usman Khawaja going steady in Sydney once again. But again England made things hard for themselves, with Joe Root putting down Khawaja - the deflection off the wicketkeeper provided some mitigation, but you'd have to say it's symptomatic of their tour. The partnership, now worth 92, hasn't been allowed to get away, but neither did England create many chances; and they also lost Ben Stokes to a side injury in the process of implementing a short-ball bombardment. The second new ball is a couple of overs away, and probably their best chance (alongside the weather) of preventing Australia from racing off with this Test. Matt'll be back for that in 30 mins or so
