Joe Root instigates move up to No. 3 for England's West Indies tour

Joe Root told England's new determination board "completely" that he needs to bat at No. 3 in the Caribbean and then some, as per between time overseeing chief Andrew Strauss.

Root has been in vocation best structure throughout the last year, scoring 1777 runs at 55.53 - incorporating six hundreds - in his 17 Tests since the beginning of 2021. He has batted at No. 4 all through (with one innings at No. 5 due to a nightwatchman) and his general record is essentially preferred there over at No. 3, however Strauss said Root had demanded that he ought to "assume that liability on".

Alex Lees, the Durham player, is set to open the batting against West Indies close by Zak Crawley, with Root opening in behind them. With Ben Foakes liable to keep wicket and bat at No. 7, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes and either Ollie Pope or Dan Lawrence are set to fill the jobs from No. 4-6.

"The main thing he [Root] said in choice was that he was exceptionally quick to bat three pushing ahead," Strauss told Sky Sports News. "That came from him; that was his solicitation. Also I think everybody concurs that that is most likely something sound for the England cricket crew right now.

"Our issues have been in the best three, top of the request. So we will see another initial association out there with Alex Lees coming in and Joe's moving forward to No. 3 - that gives a touch of room in the center request for a portion of those less experienced players to show what they can do yet in addition show what they can accomplish all the more reliably, which has been the huge issue."

"We simply haven't been predictable enough at the highest point of the request so Alex Lees comes in as a full grown cricketer who knows his game well and it's a chance for him to have a special interest at the highest point of the request with Zak Crawley," Strauss added to the BBC.

"Furthermore more critically, Joe Root has said completely that he needs to bat at No. 3, and assume that liability on. That is a seriously key change in itself and makes a touch of room in the center request for a portion of the less experienced players to play better and play all the more reliably."

Britain have completely shed the best three that began the Ashes series, with Rory Burns, Haseeb Hameed and Dawid Malan all dropped for the Caribbean visit, and Strauss said that he acknowledged troublesome inquiries would be posed with regards to the group climate, and why players have not improved whenever they have arrived at the global level.

"You can check out a ton of the players we've picked throughout the most recent year and a half and I believe they're all skilled, they've all showed they're fit for scoring runs at the global level," he said. "How they haven't treated done it reliably.

"In all actuality, when individuals begin discussing a red-ball reset, we really want to check out all that we do and say 'would we be able to improve?' That's from the homegrown game, that is the means by which we select our players, that is the way we foster our players in that England climate, and that is the test.
