Lizelle Lee to miss South Africa's opening World Cup game

South Africa opener Lizelle Lee has been controlled out of the group's initial match of the ODI World Cup against Bangladesh on March 5 in Dunedin.

ESPNcricinfo has discovered that Lee, the 2021 ICC Women's ODI Cricketer of the Year and South Africa's most dangerous player, is at present serving a required pre-competition quarantine at the New Zealand government's Managed Quarantine and Isolation (MIQ) office after a coordinated postponed appearance in the nation following the introduction of her first youngster. She will interface up with the South African crew this end of the week and will henceforth miss the apparatus against Bangladesh on Saturday.

Lee is perceived to have shown up in New Zealand last end of the week, over about fourteen days after different individuals from the South African visiting party landed and entered quarantine at MIQ. The postponement in Lee's appearance in New Zealand is down to a plan worked with by the ICC, Cricket South Africa (CSA), the South Africa Cricketers' Association (SACA) and New Zealand Cricket (NZC) following a months-in length contact among them and Lee, who had mentioned CSA for a deferred takeoff so she could invest energy with her significant other, Tanja Cronje, who brought forth their child on February 22.

"See, it's an intense one," Lee told ESPNcricinfo in a meeting in January when asked what shuffling cricket and the looming birth of her kid could look like for her driving into the World Cup. "Our child is expected no later than February 25. I'm taking a stab at all that I can to attempt get a later trip to New Zealand for the World Cup since I truly need to be there at the birth and not exclusively being at the birth, yet being there the couple of weeks prior to attempting to assist Tanja with all that is going on. I mean it won't be simple for her doing anything alone.

"I know, things are chomped hard right now in view of Covid and I realize they need everyone to attempt to fly in on a similar time, however it's simply various conditions; dislike I'm attempting to remain at home to remain at home. It's in a real sense the introduction of our first kid. Ideally, the ICC and New Zealand can oblige that and I realize CSA is supporting me also, they're as of now attempting from their side.

"It's a difficult choice concluding where I will either remain, perhaps skirt the World Cup, or I don't have any idea. My family is critical to me and, similar to I said, it's our first youngster and I would rather not pass up a major opportunity and I need to do everything I possibly can for South Africa at the World Cup too."

Lee, put 6th on the ICC rankings for ODI players following her new predominance at No. 1, had missed South Africa's home series against West Indies, as well, in January-February having been grounded by Covid-19.

South Africa, semi-finalists in the 2017 ODI World Cup, play their second match on March 11 against Pakistan, in Mount Maunganui. They lost both their warm-ups: against India by two runs and England by six wickets in a downpour shortened installation.
